Every May at the end of the school year, my school gathers for a closing chapel service at the end of which we sing a rousing rendition of Rise and Shine. Some have commented that it’s their favorite tradition. In singing the great story of Noah’s Ark we all participate in the telling of a heartwarming children’s story. Young and old, everybody sings, hand motions and all. And yet, it’s a curious tale we tell in that chapel. Noah is called by God to build an arky, arky and bring all the animals by twosies, twosies whereupon it rains for forty daysies, daysies after which the sun comes out and dries up the landy, landy. What we don’t typically acknowledge is the utter awfulness, awfulness of the story. The wickedness of humankind followed by an apocalyptic flood of epic proportions and the death of untold masses of human and animal life. That’s not the version we’re thinking about while we’re singing. Instead, we seem to be focusing on the beauty of what the story is all about. And perhaps that’s as it should be. Because despite its dreadfulness, it really is a story of redemption and hope for a humanity that seems to have lost its way.
“But Noah found favor in the sight of the Lord… And God said… I will establish my covenant with you and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife and your sons’ wives with you.” Genesis 6:8,18
It’s the story of a faithful man who seems to have caught God’s eye in a world that appears hopeless and lost. It’s the story of a family who is saved because of Noah’s faithful example. It’s the story of how one’s person’s devotion can help redeem a world gone wrong. While the tale of Noah could very well leave us with a sense of fear and dread, it also reminds us how the faith and action of one person can make a difference in a world that seems, at times, to have gone loony.
All we have to do is turn on the TV or open our computers and click onto a news site to see tales of wickedness of epic proportions all around us. Perhaps the story of Noah can serve to remind us that sometimes one person can make a difference, in the lives of their family members, their school, their students, their colleagues, their friends. May our words and actions seek to make a difference this week and may we too find favor in the sight of the Lord.
